CHAPTER TEN

Bam and Sam split up once we made it back to the group with Lucas, Oliver, and the Fae guards. I heard a few grumbles when the pixies saw how many people we had brought with us, but they quickly got to work on offering the protection spells to anyone who was with us. Strix still wasn’t back and that concerned me. I tried reaching out to him through our bond, but there was nothing.

“Have some patience, my love,” Lucas whispered. “He’ll be okay.”

“I’m sure he will be, but until I see that for myself, be used to me worrying about him. He’s our family. Nothing can happen to him.”

Lucas pulled me in for a hug, which made me feel only slightly better. We needed to get this show on the road. All the waiting was making my anxiety worse. I was ready to get it over with.

“How are you doing, Kali?” Miah asked as she and Dylan walked up to us.

“She won’t stop shaking and worrying,” Lucas replied for me. I hadn’t realized I had been shaking.

“Mind if I help?” She smiled at me. “I might have something to help calm you down while we wait.”

I nodded eagerly. “Have at it. I have zero control over my emotions nowadays.”

I watched as Miah opened her bag and dug through the various bottles she had in it. She was talking to herself under her breath, but I couldn’t quite make out what she was saying until she finally found what she was looking for.

“Here it is. I knew I brought this for a reason.” Miah opened the small bottle of oil. I watched her as she poured a few drops on her hand and rubbed her hands together. She came up to me and massaged some of the oil into my temples, then turned me around to rub the rest into my neck.

“That should do it. Give it a few minutes to soak in and you’ll feel much calmer.”

“Thank you, Miah,” Lucas said. “How are you two holding up?”

Dylan answered, “We’re ready. I’ve been working closely with Oliver while Miah has her nose in all those books Lorelle left her. I don’t see how we could be any more prepared.”

Lucas nodded approvingly. “Oliver said you’ve shown a lot of improvement. We’re really glad the two of you stayed with us.“

“So are we,” Miah beamed.

I turned quickly when I heard the hoot of my favorite owl. “Kaliah, is everyone ready?” Strix asked.

I glanced back to see the pixies were done with their part and replied yes.

“Very well. Can you ask the pixies to create a rift to Dásos? It will be easier and safer to do it that way with this many people.”

I nodded and called out for the pixies to join us where we stood. Strix finally landed on my shoulder and I relayed his request to them.

“We’ve only been there once before. Any place in particular we should open the rift to?” Sam asked.

“In the southernmost part of the forest,” Strix said and I again repeated his words.
